While I was assisting Kim Nelson with her PADI Deep Diver course I noticed something in the reef wall at Toilet Bowl. So for the second dive of the day we enter the water and the objective is to reach 100' and complete assigned skills. After all the skills were complete we came up for the tour portion of the dive.
During the tour we stayed along the reef wall to the right at Toilet bowl. Around 40' I noticed something kind of weaving in and out of the reef wall. Curious to investigate this dancing ocean creature; at first I only saw the tail and thought "oh a pretty eel", but noticed quickly that it was not an eel or ANYTHING I had ever seen! Continuing to watch the creature, paying close attention to its features it had what appeared to be a catfish like head/body structure. But the tail was that of an eel....
I was amazed at the way it moved and just played along with the reef swim-through's as if no one was watching it! Now the dive is over and I am asking everyone if they saw this fish! Well no one else saw it!! Now the search to identify it has started with the aid of the internet, fish books and description to fellow divers!!
End conclusion is that this was some form of an "Eel Tail Catfish"!!!
Very cool find, Thanks Kim Nelson!
